Your Custom Furniture Journey - The Process
When you choose J Green Woodworks, you're not just buying furniture—you're investing in a collaborative process that transforms your vision into pieces that will serve your family for generations. Here's exactly how we bring your dream furniture to life.
Step 1: Your Complimentary Design Consultation
Where Your Vision Becomes Our Blueprint
Every extraordinary piece begins with understanding your life, not just your space. During our consultation, we dive deep into how your family actually lives:
We study your space: Room dimensions, existing furniture, architectural details like beams and trim, flooring—everything that affects how your new piece will integrate
We learn your lifestyle: How does Emma spread her art projects? Where does Tyler do homework? How do you entertain? Your daily patterns shape our design
We explore possibilities: Wood species, grain patterns, finishes, and how different options will look in your specific lighting and setting
We share our vision: Creative insights and design ideas you might not have considered, drawing from years of crafting furniture for real families
The Result: A custom design proposal with detailed specifications and transparent pricing—no surprises, no pressure, just clarity about your investment.
Step 2: Design Development & Approval
Refining Every Detail Together
Once we understand your vision, we create detailed plans that account for every aspect of your piece:
Custom specifications: Exact dimensions, joinery techniques, hardware selection
Material selection: We'll show you actual wood samples and discuss how different species will age and perform in your space
Finish options: From our preferred Rubio Monocoat (so durable you won't need coasters!) to stains that match existing furniture
Final proposal: Complete project description with timeline and investment details
Your approval launches the build process—no work begins until you're completely confident in every detail.
Step 3: Craftsmanship in Action
Transparency Throughout Your Build
Your furniture journey doesn't disappear into a black box. You're part of the process:
Progress updates: Photos and videos showing your piece taking shape
Finish testing: We test stains and finishes, sending you samples for approval
Hardware selection: Choose from our curated options or approve custom selections
Quality checkpoints: Multiple inspections ensure every joint, surface, and detail meets our exacting standards
You'll watch your vision transform from raw lumber into the foundation piece your family deserves.
Step 4: Delivery & Installation
The Moment Your Home Transforms
As your piece nears completion, we coordinate the final step:
Scheduled delivery: Mutually agreed timing that works with your family's schedule
Professional installation: No assembly required—your piece arrives ready to serve your family immediately
Final walkthrough: We ensure everything exceeds your expectations before considering the project complete
Care instructions: Complete guidance on maintaining your investment for generations

YES! We can have a design consultation via zoom and ship your custom piece to you once it is completed.
-
We use local sawmills and lumber yards to source wood, as much as possible.
-
Our favorite finish for tables is Rubio Monocoat. It’s a hardwax finish that is durable and stain resistant, so you don’t even have to use coasters! However, we can stain and use other traditional finishing methods, such as polyurethane or danish oil, to match existing finishes if desired.
-
We use our very own board butter, made of mineral oil and beeswax.
-
This is a personal preference. As woodworkers, we always prefer to use the natural color of the wood with a clear finish, however, we can test several different stains during the finishing process to match existing stains or find the desired color.
-
A lot of modern style tables call for metal bases, which we source from metal workers. Some tables with circular bases or rounded legs, we source from companies that specialize in these, as we do not have a lathe. We make farmhouse style bases, trestle bases, etc. in-house. The table base you choose will depend on the style you want.
-
All our work is custom, so you won’t find prices on our website. We usually start with a design consultation so we can take measurements and discuss your vision. Once we get all of this information, we give you a quote for your project.
-
We build dining room tables, coffee tables, desks, side tables, counter tops, bars, mudroom cubbies, bookshelves. We build both free-standing furniture and also build and install built-in pieces.
-
No, we usually do not do this, but we can recommend someone that does! If you need modifications to a piece you already own, such as changing out table legs, we might be able to help with that!
-
No, we do not make chairs.
-
No, we do not have a storefront. We have a small workshop that clients can visit, by appointment only, but do not have business hours open to the public.
-
Not yet! We get this question a lot and this is something that we feel called to do. We hope to be able to offer classes soon.
